Professors to travel to Europe
Dr. Beach and Dr. Venema are traveling to Geneva, Switzerland the last week of May to participate in the Sixteenth- Century
Studies Conference (SCSC). Typically the SCSC is held somewhere in the U.S. In view of the 500th anniversary of Calvin’s birth, the venue was moved to Geneva for the spring conference. Dr. Beach will be giving an address titled “Calvin’s Treatment of Gal. 3:15-22 and Its Implications for the Covenant of Grace: A Prelude to Federal Theology.” He will also chair a session at the conference on Calvin’s Theology, where Dr. Venema will present a paper entitled “Union with Christ and the ‘Twofold Grace’ of God in Calvin’s Theology: Comments on a Recent Debate.” Both Drs. Venema and Beach have an abiding interest in Calvin’s theological contribution and the history of Reformed theology. The SCSC is an academic conference (a gathering of scholars from around the world) that covers the whole field of early modern studies.

Publisher’s Description:
A growing trend among Reformed churches is the practice of admitting young children to the Lord’s Supper. In Children at the Lord’s Table?, Cornelis P. Venema provides an insightful analysis of the theoretical arguments used by advocates of this recent trend. After clarifying terms and explaining arguments often made in favor of paedocommunion, he considers the history of the church’s confessions, teaching, and practice regarding the proper recipients of the Lord’s Supper. Presenting a historical, exegetical, and systematic treatment of the subject, Venema demonstrates the validity and value of having covenant children partake of first communion subsequent to their personal profession of faith. This is an invaluable resource for every pastor within the Reformed tradition.
