Mid-America Reformed Seminary is pleased to announce the 2026 Fall Faculty Lectures featuring Dr. James Wilhoit, Professor of Christian Education Emeritus at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Dr. Wilhoit will deliver a three-part series on November 10 & 11 titled “Formed in Christ: Community, Imitation, and the Practices of Grace,” where he will argute that Christian spiritual formation is fundamentally God’s gracious work of conforming us to Christ through the Holy Spirit, ordinarily within the community of the church and through the practices and means of grace God has given us. The lectures will be presented as follows:
1. Carried Toward Christ: Community and the Work of Spiritual Formation (November 10 @ 1:30 pm central) — Beginning with the friends who carry the paralyzed man to Jesus in Mark 2, this address explores Christian formation as deeply communal: we are formed by the Spirit through the church as we carry one another toward Christ.
2. A Curriculum for Christlikeness: Imitating Christ as the Means and Goal of Christian Spiritual Formation (November 11 @ 8:30 am) — This address considers what it means for the church to develop an intentional “curriculum for Christlikeness,” with Jesus himself as both the pattern and goal of formation. It emphasizes discipleship as a joyful apprenticeship to Christ, undertaken in dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
3. Gracious Practices: Learning to Live as God’s Beloved (November 11 @ 10:30 am) — The final address considers spiritual practices not as techniques for earning grace, but as ways of becoming available to the grace already given. It explores practices that help Christians live more consciously as God’s beloved and be formed in love of God and neighbor.
